OB-1 Cue Shaft
Re-Tipping Instructions
When re-tipping an OB-1 you
should leave the Carbon Fiber pad in place and just replace the tip
itself. To
clean off the glue and excess tip material, it is not necessary to cut
away
part of the Carbon Fiber pad with the lathe tool.
Cut
away the excess with your
lathe tool until there is just a little glue and tip residue left and
then use
a box cutter blade to scrape the rest away. With the tip extending from
the
lathe chuck, hold the blade horizontal and bring the cutting edge
against the
end of the spinning shaft and it will scrape the old glue off without
removing
any of the pad itself. It will be necessary to move the blade up and
down
slightly to make sure that you get the center of the pad completely
clean.
Lightly
sand the pad with 220
grit paper to create a good surface for the glue to adhere to.
Glue on
the tip using your
normal procedures. Gel type CA, or cyanoacrylate, adhesive is best for
this
application.
Trim
and shape the tip just
like you would for any other cue shaft. Make sure that all cuts, with
lathe
tools or hand tools, are made lengthways towards the ferrule (cutter
moving
towards the lathe chuck), and not away from it. Cutting away from the
ferrule
will cause the Carbon Fiber Pad to loosen and come off later when
playing.
Note:
The
Carbon Fiber tip pad that
is used on the OB-1 cue shaft is not the normal vulcanized fiber pad
that has
been used under tips for years. Our pad is actually Carbon Fiber
composite very
similar to that which is used in the aerospace industry. We machine
them from
sheets into the small circles, so they are not available any where
else. These
pads will not soften the hit like the other pads either. The primary
purpose
for them is to keep the ferrule from spreading, or mushrooming. As long
as an
OB-1 has a Carbon Fiber pad under the tip, we will guarantee the
ferrule for
life! Replacement Carbon Fiber pads are available on our accessories
page.
Note:
It is
recommended to use a
lathe to remove the old tip and to shape and size the new tip after it
has been
installed. However, it can be done by hand, if you are careful. When
using a
knife to remove the old tip, or to trim the new tip to size, be very
careful
not to push away from the ferrule lengthwise. Doing so may cause the
Carbon
Fiber Pad to come off when playing.
Replacement of the Carbon
Fiber Pad is not possible by hand. The Carbon Fiber Pad is very hard
and is
best cut using carbide cutters on a lathe. |
