OB-1 Cue Shaft Ferrule Replacement

The laminated maple ferrule used exclusively on the OB-1 cue shaft can be replaced using conventional ferrule replacement techniques.

Start by turning the ferrule down to remove it from the tenon. Leave the tip and pad in place for this if they are already there. The tenon diameter should be turned to .404” so that the new ferrule will have a snug, but not tight fit.

Glue on the new ferrule with Polyurethane based wood glue. There are a few on the market and are available at you local home supply store. Be sure to hold the ferrule in place with a rubber band while the glue sets up. Polyurethane glues do foam up, and could push the ferrule up on the tenon.

Once glued in place, face the excess of the new ferrule, and the old tip and pad off using a sharp carbide tool on your lathe.

Install the new Carbon Fiber pad using thin CA on the end of the ferrule, and thick on the pad itself. Make sure the pad is roughed up with 220 before gluing it to the ferrule. Do not trim the pad now.

Install the tip and trim the tip, pad, and ferrule to final diameter all at the same time. Trimming out and shaping the tip is no different than any other cue shaft. Make sure that all cuts are made in the direction of the ferrule, towards the lathe chuck. Cutting away from the ferrule can loosen the pad causing the pad to come loose later.

Many cue makers like to seal the ferrule with thin CA so that it will not pick up chalk easily. Thin CA will also polish nicely and leave a nice shiny appearance.

Ferrules and pads are available exclusively from OBCues, and are for replacement on OB-1 cue shafts only!
